These carpets derived their names from the town of Sarab situated between Tabriz and Ardabil, a town in East Azerbaijan Province, Iran, close to the Turkish border. There are various versions of the Sarabi carpet. In some, the center field is covered with vertical lines, which are decorated by blooming branches arranged one after another in a symmetrical pattern. The rugs of Sarab, which are also known as Sarabi, have light, and very bright colours. The ornamental elements are woven almost in dotted lines, which to some extent resembles Karabakh carpets.The Sarabi quality is higher than the average Persian carpet or rug and knot counts are around 80 knots per square inch with the very best going up to 100 knots per square inch. The art of rug weaving was brought to Turkey in the 11th century, during the height of the expansion of Turkish Empire into central and East Asia. The styles and motifs of the Turkish Sarabi weaving became more distinct during the reign the Ottomans, when tribal weaving centers and court weavings began to flourish. These early centres gave rise to the famous Hereke, Ushak, Milas, Sarabi, Keisari and Kazak rugs. These fine wool hand woven rugs made using the traditional Turkish knots are found in the south east of Turkey near the Azerbaijan border with Iran.
