Hand woven Afghan Carpets, Rugs and Runners

Afghanistan's thriving carpets and textiles trade is a legacy of the country's rich commercial history and diverse culture. World-renowned for their intricate designs, Afghan carpets reflect the heritage of cottage-based craftsmanship passed through generations of families. Afghanistan produces several types of handmade carpets, including felted wool carpets (namads), flat non-pile fabric woven carpets (kilims), and pile and knotted carpets made from wool, silk, and cotton. As a testament to the meticulous nature of the art, one large Afghan carpet typically takes six to nine months to weave.

The Afghan rug woven in the past fifty years is a wool-on-wool type with a repeated octagonal figure called elephant's foot or Bukhara print on a red field. It is called simply Afghan or Dulatabad. A hundred years ago the guls, which is the name of the octagonal design, were a larger 16 inches design. Guls have become smaller over the years and now are no more than several inches across. As the guls have shrunk, so has the range of colors in the rugs. Today most Afghanistan carpets or rugs contain only two colors: a very bright red and a very deep, blue that is almost black.

One of the most distinctive and exotic of all Oriental rugs is the Shindand or Adraskand (named after local villages), woven near Herat in western Afghanistan. Strangely elongated human and animal figures are their signature look. Another of the more common of the Afghanistan rugs is the Baluchi rug, most one of which is the Baluchi prayer rugs. They are made by Afghanistan's Baloch people, who are located in the western parts of the Afghanistan.

The Royal Balouch rugs are some of the priciest Afghani rugs. Woven from 100% wool, they are usually patterned with beautiful and intricate floral patterns, geometrics, and stylized motifs. The Royal Balouch rug is woven with an extremely dense weave and they usually come in small and medium sizes.In the North of Afghanistan the Esari Turkmen weave the most reputable of Afghan rugs. The Khal Mohammadi style is made from 100% wool and hand woven in a classical and innovative style that is second to none. With a rich blend of colours and perfect mesh of patterns the Khal Mohammadi give a feeling of royalty to the owner.

Of all the Afghan carpets we provide, the Uzbek Sumak is the perfect rug to provide a unique antique appearance and feeling to any room. Hand woven from a selection of fine wools, with floral, geometric or medallion patterns, weavers then use warm earth tone colours to accentuate desired antique appearance. Each of the rugs woven uses only the most luxurious selection of wools and has a unique artistic depiction of holy places and employs a directional pattern so it can be used during daily prayers.

The most famous of Afghan weaves is the war rug. These rugs came out of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, and the Afghan weavers started incorporating war imagery into their rugs. These include motifs of helicopters, maps, Kalashnikovs, tanks and war jets. These truly show how an ancient culture clashes with a modern superpower at war.
